In December 2019, the society started working to develop Phase 4 called Valemount Cares with a housing component as well as a non-housing component for supportive services. A Care Committee was established to oversee the project and a project coordinator hired in January 2020.
The society plans to coordinate services for seniors so they can continue living in the community if they don’t need medical care. VSCHS is looking to partner with organizations that already provide support services such as Better at Home and Community Health Workers. It will also develop a plan to provide gaps like meals and activities in-house.
The non-housing component of the facility could include areas like kitchen, dining area, lounge / activity room, lift tub, multi-purpose room (for services like hair, nails, feet), guest room, etc.
Community consultation with seniors, stakeholders and service providers has helped identify and confirm the features of the non-housing component for the first phase (supportive living) and the society plans to raise money through sources outside BC Housing for these tenant support and program spaces.
The Village of Valemount has made land south of 201 Ash Street available for affordable housing. In January 2020, Council specifically approved that a portion of that could be used to develop a seniors’ facility.
Since there is ample land to develop Valemount, we envision this facility to be developed as part of a Campus of Care going from Independent Living, Supportive / Assisted Living to Complex Care.
The Project Lead is coordinating all the tasks related to the development of Valemount Cares – a Supportive Housing facility for seniors that will eventually include long term care beds.
